Add Exercises From the Library

The first step to building a routine (reusable workout template) or an empty workout in Hevy is to add exercises from the library. You can do so by tapping the blue + Add exercise while creating a routine, editing an existing one, or logging a live session.

Use the search bar and filters for equipment and target muscles to find relevant activities and add multiple together or one at a time. The Hevy library offers 400+ relevant exercises to pick from.

Write Custom Exercise Notes

Once you’ve added an exercise to a routine, you can write a custom note, such as a tip or reminder––for example, “Pause for 2 seconds at the bottom.” This note will appear for the exercise each time you reuse the routine in the future.

You can write an additional note for any exercise while logging a workout. This note will only be relevant for the specific session and could be an observation or something similar. For example, “Left shoulder felt uncomfortable during this bench session.”

Adjust the Automatic Rest Timer

Below the note section, you can adjust the automatic rest timer for the exercise. Then, as you log that session and mark a set as completed, the timer will begin its countdown and notify you when it reaches zero.

You can also keep the timer off for some (or all) exercises if you prefer to rest intuitively.

Add and Remove Sets

Hevy allows you to add sets to any exercise while building a routine or logging a live session by tapping the grey + Add Set button as many times as needed. You can also remove a previously added set by swiping left to reveal the red Delete button.

Mark Sets by Type

The next step is to mark your sets by type or keep them in their default state, labeled ‘Normal Set.’

Click on any set to open the menu and select from the options: Warm Up Set, Normal Set, Failure Set, or Drop Set. You can also tap the bottom option to delete a set.

You can mark each set differently and use all four types on the same exercise. For instance:

  • Sets 1-2: Warm Up
  • Sets 3-4: Normal
  • Set 5: Failure
  • Set 6: Drop Set

Program Loads, Reps, and Duration

Under KG or LBS (depending on your settings), you can program a specific weight for each set of the exercise. You can tap the KG or LBS text to open the weight input settings and change between the units.

Next, you can add specific repetition targets under the REPS column for each set. You can tap the REPS text to open the options and switch to rep ranges. This allows you to input two values––for example, 6 to 8.

When doing a duration-based activity like the plank, the available option is TIME. Tap the hyphen (-) sign on each set and use your phone’s keyboard to write the target duration.

While unavailable during routine building, you can enable RPE (Profile tab > Settings gear icon on the top right > Workouts > RPE Tracking enable via the toggle switch). This will allow you to log an RPE value for any set while doing a workout.

Additional Exercise Options

Tap the three dots next to any exercise you’ve added to a workout to reveal additional options:

  • Reorder exercises through drag-and-drop
  • Replace the exercise by choosing a different one from the library
  • Add the exercise to a superset (you can bundle more than two exercises)
  • Add pre-designed warm-up sets (available if you’ve enabled it in the settings)
  • Remove exercise

Best workout tracking app

This is by far my favorite workout tracking app. You can tell that the creators work out themselves because they know how important it is to be able to label drop sets, failure sets, supersets, etc. It allows me to track everything I need. When if it’s been a while since I did an exercise I can easily take a look at my history.

Kept Me Accountable

I have been using this app since January. I love it. It’s the thing that had kept me in the gym this year because it helps me see results. I love how it syncs with my watch and I can input the weight and reps on my watch or phone. I appreciate that it supplies workouts for different splits so I don’t need to pay for a trainer. I love how it holds the last rep and weight from the previous time I did the exercise.

Really helpful illustrations

My focus now is on building functional strength to avoid injuries as I age. Coming back to lifting as an adult with moderate gym anxiety, the Hevy app has helped me track progress on my weights and allowed me to make intelligent choices about increasing the amount I’m lifting. I really appreciate the illustrations and animations that help me learn new movements.

No. You can add as many exercises as you want to any routine or workout and include all the necessary sets to each activity.
An exercise note written in a routine appears each time you reuse that routine, meaning these are more suitable as reminders or tips. In contrast, a note written during a live workout is saved for the session. As such, these notes provide additional details for the specific workout––for instance, if a modification leads to better muscle activation or if a movement leads to joint discomfort.
Yes. Navigate to the Profile tab, select the Settings gear icon, tap Workouts, and navigate to Default Rest Timer. The duration you set will be the default rest timer for each movement you add to a routine or workout from now on.
Two reasons. You haven’t enabled RPE (Profile tab > Settings gear icon > Workouts > RPE Tracking > toggle on), or you’ve added a duration exercise (such as the plank) where RPE is unavailable.
Tap the three dots on an exercise and select + Add To Superset. Choose a second movement from those you’ve added to the workout. To add another movement, tap the three dots, then + Add To Superset, and select the existing superset. Repeat the process as many times as necessary to create your circuit. You can adjust the rest timer for each movement or turn it off.
