What are Gym Routines?

A gym routine on Hevy is a workout you create once and use as many times as you want. Any routine you create is stored in your profile. You can store them together or organize them in folders.

How to Create a Gym Routine With Hevy

Navigate to the Workout tab and tap the grey New Routine button. If you have two or more folders, you will be prompted to select one where the routine will be saved. If not, the app will take you to the routine building section.

There, you will be able to name your routine (e.g., Push), add exercises, and adjust all the training details:

(Related: Exercise Programming Options)

Tap the three dots next to any exercise to reveal additional options, including to add the activity to a superset. You can pair two movements or add multiple for a circuit-type session:

You will also be able to write a custom note to any exercises in the routine, such as a reminder while working out or a clarification about the setup.

Once finished with the details, save the routine to your library.

Creating Routines From Previous Workouts

Another option is to create a routine from a workout you’ve completed. To do so, navigate to Profile, scroll down to your recently completed workouts, and tap the three dots on the one you want to save as routine.

Edit any of the training details and select Save to store the session as a reusable workout template in your library, which is found in the Workout tab.

How to Create and Use Routine Folders

The purpose of folders is to make it easier to organize your workouts and more easily find the correct ones.

To create a new folder, go to the Workout tab, and tap the small folder icon on the right below + Start Empty Workout button. Give the folder a name, and you’re good to go.

Once created, you can add unlimited new routines to the folder by tapping the + Add new routine text, clicking the three dots and selecting + Add New Routine on a folder, or tapping the New Routine button and selecting the folder where you want to save it.

Tapping the three dots next to a folder reveals additional options: share the folder on other platforms, reorder the folders through drag and drop, rename the folder, add a new routine, or delete the folder.

You can also freely move routines between folders. Tap and hold on a routine and drag it to the folder you want.

How to Use Routines

Navigate to the Workout tab inside Hevy and scroll down to find the routine you want to use in the appropriate folder. Tap Start Routine to begin the session with the stopwatch tracking the duration.

You can log training data, mark sets as completed, and change any variables: add, remove, swap, or reorder exercises, add or remove sets, mark sets by type, adjust the rest timer, change the exercise notes, and create supersets.

Once finished, Hevy will ask if you want to update the original routine with any changes you’ve made. You can keep the original routine or update it with the most recent changes to be more relevant for future workouts.

Additionally, you can tap the three dots next to an individual routine for additional options:

  • Share routine with others outside Hevy
  • Duplicate routine (ideal if you want to use a routine as a foundation to streamline workout plan building)
  • Edit routine
  • Delete routine

Also, tap and hold on a routine to activate drag-and-drop, which allows you to rearrange the workouts inside a folder or move routines between folders.

Best workout tracking app

This is by far my favorite workout tracking app. You can tell that the creators work out themselves because they know how important it is to be able to label drop sets, failure sets, supersets, etc. It allows me to track everything I need. When if it’s been a while since I did an exercise I can easily take a look at my history.

Kept Me Accountable

I have been using this app since January. I love it. It’s the thing that had kept me in the gym this year because it helps me see results. I love how it syncs with my watch and I can input the weight and reps on my watch or phone. I appreciate that it supplies workouts for different splits so I don’t need to pay for a trainer. I love how it holds the last rep and weight from the previous time I did the exercise.

Really helpful illustrations

My focus now is on building functional strength to avoid injuries as I age. Coming back to lifting as an adult with moderate gym anxiety, the Hevy app has helped me track progress on my weights and allowed me to make intelligent choices about increasing the amount I’m lifting. I really appreciate the illustrations and animations that help me learn new movements.
