Hevy’s Weight Plate Calculator

The plate calculator, also known as a barbell calculator, helps you figure out what weight plates you need to add to a bar to achieve a specific weight.

It provides recommendations based on:

  • The target weight
  • Your available weight plates
  • The bar’s weight

For instance, if you want to lift 120 kilograms, your bar weighs 20 kilograms, and you have 2.5, 5, 10, and 15-kilo plates, the calculator determines the best option:

How to Use the Plate Calculator

Step 1: Enable in Settings

Make sure you’ve enabled the feature in your workout settings by scrolling to the bottom of a workout and selecting the grey Settings button or navigating to the app settings (Profile tab > gear icon on the top right > Workouts > Plate Calculator > enable via toggle button).

Step 2: Add a Barbell Exercise to a Workout

Start a new session (be it from an existing routine or an empty workout) and add any barbell, short bar, or EZ bar exercise.

Step 3: Add Target Load For a Set

Write your load target for each set in the fields under the KG or LBS column (depending on the units you’ve selected).

Step 4: Tap ‘Calculator’

Tap the Calculator button on the bottom left, just above the keyboard. Then, select your available weight plates and the bar’s weight.

Step 5 (Optional): Manage Your Available Equipment

With the barbell calculator open, you can tap Manage next to Available Equipment to customize your available options.

This is particularly useful if you work out at home or in a small gym with limited equipment. You can add additional bar and custom plate options with specific loads.

Best workout tracking app

This is by far my favorite workout tracking app. You can tell that the creators work out themselves because they know how important it is to be able to label drop sets, failure sets, supersets, etc. It allows me to track everything I need. When if it’s been a while since I did an exercise I can easily take a look at my history.

Kept Me Accountable

I have been using this app since January. I love it. It’s the thing that had kept me in the gym this year because it helps me see results. I love how it syncs with my watch and I can input the weight and reps on my watch or phone. I appreciate that it supplies workouts for different splits so I don’t need to pay for a trainer. I love how it holds the last rep and weight from the previous time I did the exercise.

Really helpful illustrations

My focus now is on building functional strength to avoid injuries as I age. Coming back to lifting as an adult with moderate gym anxiety, the Hevy app has helped me track progress on my weights and allowed me to make intelligent choices about increasing the amount I’m lifting. I really appreciate the illustrations and animations that help me learn new movements.
